چکیده

The paper presents the results of an accuracy analysis of a number of gridded Digital Surface Models (DSMs) which have been created from first return laser scanning (LiDAR) data. DSMs are created using a variety of methods, and differences between the models and the raw LiDAR data are quantified and the spatial patterns of the errors explored. The results presented in this paper demonstrate the importance of understanding not only the global accuracy of elevation models, but also the location and magnitude of individual errors which are created during DSM creation. Results to date indicate that errors of up to 1m can be created by using different techniques, and that these errors will affect the results of any subsequent analysis. This investigation highlights the importance for both data suppliers and data users to better understand errors which are created within digital elevation models and incorporated within any subsequent analysis.

Effect of digital elevation model’s resolution in producing flood hazard maps

Flooding is one of the most devastating natural disasters occurring annually in the Philippines. A call for a solution for this malady is very challenging as well as crucial to be addressed. Mapping flood hazard is an effective tool in determining the extent and depth of floods associated with hazard level in specified areas that need to be prioritized during flood occurrences. Precedent to the...

Conditional Random Fields for Airborne Lidar Point Cloud Classification in Urban Area

Over the past decades, urban growth has been known as a worldwide phenomenon that includes widening process and expanding pattern. While the cities are changing rapidly, their quantitative analysis as well as decision making in urban planning can benefit from two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) digital models. The recent developments in imaging and non-imaging sensor technologies, s...

Adjustment of Measurements with Multiplicative Errors: Error Analysis, Estimates of the Variance of Unit Weight, and Effect on Volume Estimation from LiDAR-Type Digital Elevation Models

Modern observation technology has verified that measurement errors can be proportional to the true values of measurements such as GPS, VLBI baselines and LiDAR. Observational models of this type are called multiplicative error models. This paper is to extend the work of Xu and Shimada published in 2000 on multiplicative error models to analytical error analysis of quantities of practical intere...

The Impact of Lidar Elevation Uncertainty on Mapping Intertidal Habitats on Barrier Islands

While airborne lidar data have revolutionized the spatial resolution that elevations can be realized, data limitations are often magnified in coastal settings. Researchers have found that airborne lidar can have a vertical error as high as 60 cm in densely vegetated intertidal areas. The uncertainty of digital elevation models is often left unaddressed; however, in low-relief environments, such...

Accuracy of Airborne Lidar-Derived Elevation: Empirical Assessment and Error Budget

As part of a countywide large-scale mapping effort for Richland County, South Carolina, an accuracy assessment of a recently acquired lidar-derived data set was conducted. Airborne lidar (2-m nominal posting) was collected at a flying height of 1207 meters above ground level (AGL) using an Optech ALTM (Airborne Laser Terrain Mapper) 1210 system. Unique to this study are the reference point elev...
